Training should be fun for you and your dog!

General Training Tips

  • CONSISTENCY is the most important characteristic for successful training.

  • Reward (treats/praise/petting) the behaviors you want and ignore the ones you don’t.

  • It should be fun for you and your dog. Do not raise your voice or speak harshly.

  • Train in a quiet indoor place with no other dogs or distractions around.

  • Only train 5-10 minutes twice a day. Second time before dinner when dog is hungrier. (More is not better.)

  • Train after the dog has burned off some energy from a walk, run, or play but is not too tired.Put the leash on, this will be a signal that it's time to train.

  • Only give a cue (spoken command) or hand signal ONCE!!!

  • Always end each exercise on a positive success!

Treats

Service Dog Training

I met Steve as the trainer for the Wounded Warrior Project/Action Toward Independence Veterans Dog Program where dogs are trained to be Veterans’ Service Dogs. I can't thank him enough for his time, dedication, and most importantly excellent results.

My puppy Zelda is an AKC German Shepherd, a breed known to be challenging to train. We get more compliments about Zelda’s sweet, loving, and obedient nature than we can count. She is a product of Steve's method of constant positive reinforcement. He really helped turn Zelda into a superstar dog.

Always a professional with thoughtful and engaging training sessions giving real-life practical exercises, advice, and a roadmap with great notes after each session to help me practice until the next session.

If you are serious about training to improve your understanding and relationship with your dog, Steve is your guy. We’ve recommended Great Companion Dog Training to my own family & I can recommend them for yours, too!
